A much longed for date square is loved by everyone–sweet and savoury, crumbly and salty.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dates, chopped
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups butter
  • 2 cups light brown sugar
  • 4 cups quick oats

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350°. Break up dates, place in saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, let stand for 10 minutes and mash with a potato masher. Set aside.  

In a mixing bowl, combine flour and baking soda and mix well, then add all remaining ingredients and blend by hand until just crumbled. Press half the mixture on bottom of 9 x 13 baking pan, then top first with date filling then with remaining crumbs. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden. Remove from heat and cool.
